What are Apprenticeships?
Apprenticeships are employment opportunities with paid, work-based learning.
There are two main types of apprenticeships:
- Registered Apprenticeships (government approved, formal, multi-year, career training, with additional classroom instruction, leading to a recognized credential).
- Unregistered Apprenticeships (employer sponsored, paid, on-the-job training with a range of the amount and type of training offered).
It is important to explore both options to make informed career decisions. There are many quality unregistered apprenticeships, though sometimes they are better described as to paid, on-the-job training.
Registered Apprenticeships are multi-year, Federal and State approved full-time employment training program, with paid on-the-job training, working alongside a skilled mentor, and substantial classroom instruction. Guaranteed wages that increase over time. A nationally recognized credential is awarded at completion of program. Prepares apprentice for a successful career in their chosen field. High school diploma or GED required.
Apprenticeships vs Internships: What's the Difference?
Internships are short-term work-based learning experiences, lasting weeks or months. Most often offered to current high school or college students. There is no formal expectation of full-time employment after completion of an internship program, but offers of employment are common.
Co-op internships are short-term work-based learning experiences that are longer in duration than regular internships (months, years, multiple semesters) and often involve alternating between school and work. Co-op internships often lead to full-time employment offers.
