An HVAC apprenticeship program is a multi-year, work-based training program designed to prepare individuals for careers in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration industry. The program combines paid on-the-job training (OJT) with related technical instruction (RTI), allowing apprentices to develop practical skills while earning a wage.
Typically lasting 3 to 5 years, apprentices work under the supervision of experienced or licensed technicians, gradually increasing their knowledge, responsibilities, and pay as they progress.
Components
- Hands-on training: Apprentices install, maintain, and repair HVAC systems in residential, commercial, or industrial settings.
- Classroom instruction: Covers topics such as electrical systems, refrigeration theory, safety practices, and mechanical codes.
- Earn-while-you-learn model: Apprentices receive wages that increase as they gain skills and complete program milestones.
- Mentorship: Training is guided by experienced journeyman or licensed technicians.
Upon completion, apprentices typically qualify for
- Journey-level technician status
- Industry certifications or state licensure (where required)
- Long-term career opportunities in HVAC installation, maintenance, and system design
